Development History of Vortex Flow Meters in China

The development history of vortex flow meters in China has evolved from technology introduction and imitation to independent innovation, and further towards intelligence and internationalization, which can be specifically divided into the following four stages:

   1. Technology Introduction and Preliminary Exploration Stage (1970s - 1980s)

After foreign vortex flow meters achieved commercialization, driven by the demand for industrial automation, China began to pay attention to this technology. This stage focused on introducing and learning foreign technologies, with some scientific research institutions and manufacturers conducting basic research. In 1988, Longkou Automation Instrument Factory (now the predecessor of Shandong Feilong Instrument Co., Ltd.) produced the first vortex flow meter in China, marking the start of mass production exploration for domestic vortex flow meters.

   2. Domesticization Initiation and Initial Development Stage (1990s)

Domestic enterprises gradually mastered the core production processes of vortex flow meters, and products began to be applied in industrial scenarios on a small scale. In 1993, Shandong Feilong Instrument held a product identification meeting for the LUB series stress-type vortex flow meters, promoting product standardization and laying the foundation for subsequent specialized R&D of vortex flow meters. During this period, the industry began to establish quality systems, with some enterprises obtaining relevant certifications, and domestic products gradually replacing some mid-to-low-end imported products.

   3. Technological Breakthrough and Large-Scale Application Stage (Early 21st Century - 2010s)

Domestic enterprises focused on tackling key core technical problems and achieved remarkable results. In 2008, the national standard for vortex flow meters was formulated. In 2011, domestic vortex flow meters were mass-applied in core equipment of large chemical fertilizer plants. During this period, domestic products realized large-scale application in fields such as petroleum and chemical industry, and were also included in industry selection specifications.

  4. Intelligent Upgrade and International Expansion Stage (2020 - Present)

Domestic vortex flow meters are moving towards high precision, intelligence and networking. The accuracy of mainstream products has reached 0.2 level, and some models can be connected to platforms such as Alibaba Cloud. It is estimated that the domestic market scale of vortex flow meters will exceed 18 billion yuan in 2025. Domestic manufacturers not only occupy a large domestic market share, but also actively expand overseas markets. The export volume of some enterprises has achieved significant growth, and their products have strong competitiveness in the international mid-to-low-end market.
